Electricity to be restored in Port-au-Prince "soon," announces Leslie Voltaire

Presidential advisor Leslie Voltaire, co-responsible for security projects, announced the imminent return of electricity to Port-au-Prince, approximately two weeks after the forced closure of the Péligre hydroelectric plant and the destruction of several pylons supplying power to the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area.

During her participation in the Patriotic Congress for National Rescue on Friday, June 27, 2025, at the NH El Rancho hotel in Pétion-Ville, Leslie Voltaire declared that Port-au-Prince would soon have its electricity restored.

"Port-au-Prince will soon have its power restored." "We are preparing to replace Péligre with Carrefour," he stated, without specifying a date, in response to a question from a congresswoman and former resident of Carrefour-Feuilles.

The former coordinator of the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT) assured that the Péligre site is now secure and that arrangements will be made to repair the pylons damaged by the population of Mirebalais on Tuesday, June 17 and Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

Contacted by Le Nouvelliste, a source close to Electricité d'Haïti (Ed'H), who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed that the institution wanted to avoid sharing this information with the public to avoid any adverse reactions before everything is ready.

"It's possible. "We have two sources of production: hydroelectric, as in Péligre, and thermal, as in the Carrefour I, II, and III power plants," this source confided, while regretting that this information was made public prematurely.

"This was sensitive information. We intended to keep it confidential until a concrete alternative to Péligre is fully operational," she continued, confirming that alternative options are being studied.

According to the same source, Ed'H has been working for years to reduce its dependence on the Péligre power plant by diversifying its energy sources. However, these efforts have been hampered by fuel supply difficulties.

Work is currently underway to make the Carrefour facilities operational and to run the system in, she confided. "Once the system is stabilized, Port-au-Prince will be able to receive power at any time," said this contact, who expressed hope that the government will implement the necessary measures to secure these strategic sites.

Asked about the capacity of the Carrefour power plants to meet the capital's needs, the source specified that Ed'H is planning a rotating power supply strategy while waiting for additional sources to become available.

The Péligre power plant had a nominal capacity of 54 megawatts, of which only 36 were still available due to the shutdown of a turbine. Ed'H also hopes to recover the 25 megawatts of the E-Power thermal power plant to boost its production.

Although discussions are underway regarding other alternatives to Péligre, the source emphasized that the power plant itself is not suffering from a production problem, but rather from an electricity transmission issue.

To date, she indicated, at least 10 pylons have been destroyed. Even if the government manages to regain control of Péligre, it would be impossible to restore power to Port-au-Prince without repairing this infrastructure, a task that requires financial resources, logistical equipment, and technical expertise currently beyond the country's reach, the source close to Ed'H indicated.
