During an interview with a group of journalists this Friday, June 20th, at the Villa d'accueil, the President of the Transitional Presidential Council was asked about the preliminary draft of the new constitution. This text was submitted to the executive on May 21st, and the steering committee gave the public one month to respond. This deadline expires this Saturday.
While the text is the subject of much criticism, Fritz Alphonse Jean was asked about the CPT's position on this matter. "This preliminary draft of the new constitution is not the business of the Transitional Presidential Council. Personally, there are points in the document that I don't even understand," he stated, somewhat uncritically.
"Is that why I proposed the creation of a reading committee? We have already consulted some people. This committee will have to analyze the text, taking into account the criticisms made about the document," he continued.
Furthermore, the CPT president also responded to critics who believe the drafting of this text was not inclusive. Citing officials, Fritz Alphonse Jean pointed to the security environment as the main obstacle to broader public participation in discussions on the drafting of the text. "Because of the insecurity, the meetings were not sufficiently publicized. They were held behind closed doors. The organizers did not want to draw too much attention to these meetings," he emphasized.
