The Haitian government is providing financial assistance to 3,400 internally displaced families to help them pay their rent. Each family receives a stipend of 100,000 gourdes.
Delmas, May 16, 2025. – As part of its assistance program for internally displaced persons, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor (MAST) distributed checks to 3,400 families living in shelters on Thursday, May 15. The ceremony took place at the premises of the Office for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities in Delmas 60.
Each family received a check for 99,000 gourdes. The remaining 1,000 gourdes will be used to issue a tax registration number to the beneficiaries by the General Directorate of Taxes (DGI), stated Minister Georges Wilbert Franck.
This assistance aims to enable beneficiaries, previously housed in schools or public buildings, to find decent housing. "The government is moving from an emergency response to a structured response in the context of managing the humanitarian crisis," declared Minister Franck, in the presence of Secretary of State for the Integration of Persons with Disabilities, Génard Joseph.
According to him, this action is part of a series of initiatives planned to support internally displaced persons. These include the distribution of hot meals, the establishment of solidarity baskets, and cash transfers.
Secretary of State Génard Joseph welcomed this initiative, emphasizing that in the design of the social program, priority was given to persons with disabilities. However, he denounced the inhumane conditions in which displaced persons live in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas.
Daniele Febe, representative of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Haiti, also attended the ceremony, demonstrating the international community's support for this government effort.
If we fully understand the essence of this initiative, the government does not intend to adopt drastic measures to root out gangs. The ordeal of victims of gun violence continues.
