Referendum failure?: EDE demands, in any case, the resignation of the CPT

Port-au-Prince, May 12, 2025.- In a press release published this Monday, the political party Les Engagés pour le Développement (EDE) reacted strongly to the persistent silence of the Presidential Transitional Council (CPT)

The party had announced the holding of a constitutional referendum for May 11, 2025. While this deadline has passed without any official explanation, EDE castigates the inability of the CPT and the government led by Alix Didier Fils-Aimé to successfully carry out this democratic exercise, deemed fundamental to the country's institutional reconstruction.

The party reiterates that it has been warning for several months about the impossibility of organizing a referendum in a context marked by endemic insecurity, a profound crisis of legitimacy, and the absence of frank dialogue with the various components of Haitian society.

In its press release, EDE also denounces the corruption scandals which, according to it, have seriously undermined the credibility of the Council, which now appears completely disconnected from the realities and suffering of the people.

The total absence of official communication surrounding the cancellation of the referendum is described by the party as a "blatant lack of respect" for the population. No justification has been provided by the authorities, and no memorandum has been published, thus exacerbating the climate of widespread mistrust.

Faced with this situation, EDE notes that security conditions continue to deteriorate, compromising any prospect of free, transparent, and credible elections in the near future. In its view, the CPT's failure to guarantee the security of citizens and to honor its commitment to organize the May 11 referendum confirms its inability to ensure the democratic transition provided for in the April 3, 2024, agreement.

Based on this observation, EDE demands the immediate resignation of the Presidential Transitional Council, believing that a major political upheaval is now essential. The party also calls on the population to maintain pressure through peaceful and ongoing actions to demand a profound change in governance.

Finally, EDE calls on the nation's vital forces to come together to define a new political direction capable of meeting the urgent needs of the Haitian people, alleviating the prevailing poverty, and laying the foundations for a more stable future.

In a country mired in turmoil, where the people endure the unacceptable and demand the essentials, the specter of a new political transition inevitably looms.
